Sports notes

This time last year I wrote that the Cubs should hire Joe Girardi. They didn’t, but made the playoffs anyway. BTW, whenever I saw Lou Pinella in the dugout he looked like he’d just come off a three day bender. Anyway, Joe now has responsibility for the Yankees (sans A-Rod). Good luck to him.

The Redskins got pounded by the Patriots on Sunday. The score was 52-7 and it wasn’t even that close. Ugly, but I couldn’t stop watching. Joe Gibbs should have stayed away and kept his Hall of Fame image intact.

Kimi Raikkonen is the F1 champion, at least until McLaren’s appeal. It seems out of character for me, but I can’t help but like Ferrari.

The Hurricanes are off to a great start. It’s a long season (too long) but they’ve already been challenged by injuries and have still managed to win.

This upcoming Saturday holds an ironic pair of NCAA football games. The SEC East leading UT Vols play the Ragin’ Cajuns of LA-Lafayette, while the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles visit No. 22 Auburn. This is so wrong.

YouTube to iTunes

I found these simple instructions and needed a place to store them, so here they are:

Use Safari.
Open the page with the video you want.
Open the ‘activity’ menu.
This lists all the items on this page, locate the entry for the video file (it will be the largest file size).
Double click on this line, it will download.
Rename it, no need to put a file extension on it.
Convert this file to ‘iPod’ format using the free application ‘iSquint’
http://www.isquint.org/.
You’re good to go.
A bit more long winded, but at least it’s free.

What’d that say?

I was flipping through the Parade magazine from Sunday’s paper, when I saw this headline “Would You Vote for a Moron?” I then expected to see a picture of W along with some poll results related to his intelligence, or lack thereof. Reading the first sentence made me realize that the article was about Mitt Romney. Huh?

The headline was actually “Would you vote for a Mormon?”

That made me laugh. Not only at my misreading, but at the fact that over half the voting public had already voted for a moron, so why would voting for a Mormon even be an issue. Am I to assume that most voters would prefer a moron over a Mormon?

On the road

I’m in Huntsville, AL for a business trip. I had an hour and 45 minute delay in Atlanta, but that wasn’t too awful. I have reaffirmed that I don’t like business travel and that I don’t want a job that requires it. Even when nothing particularly bad happens, it still is a drudgery that takes you away from home and family. There’s not enough money to make me like it.

Christmas trip wrapup

We’re back home safely. The time in Oak Ridge had a few interesting highlights. As usual, a big positive was our meal at Big Ed’s Pizza. This Oak Ridge landmark is our favorite pizza anywhere and we always look forward to it. The kids are old enough to enjoy the food, but they don’t really get the whole Big Ed’s experience. It will come in time.

For the category of “you might be in Oak Ridge”…

We had to go to the Staples to make some photocopies. This Staples is in a small shopping area made up of separate buildings placed somewhat haphazardly. As we’re leaving the store I notice a line of cars to my left, but I can’t see what they are waiting for. My first thought was that they were in line at a bank’s drive-thru teller. As I get farther out in the parking lot I can see the object of their desire. It is a drive-thru window, but not a bank. They are in line for the Discount Tobacco store. Get your carton of smokes from the comfort of the driver’s seat. I guess they didn’t get the memo from the Surgeon General. Or maybe they figure the radioactive material dumped all over the county makes the health risk from smoking inconsequential.

I’ve got a photo of Maria in front of the Nail Salon/Tanning Bed/Post Office. I can’t make this any funnier. It’s good on it’s own.
